For Mid Canterbury’s Aimee Cosgrove, the Tour de Canterbury is a family affair.
Aimee and her two children (ages eight and 10) will walk, run and bike to accumulate virtual kms on their epic tour of the Canterbury region.
As Sport Canterbury’s Physical Health Advisor based at Ashburton’s EA networks Centre, Aimee is a great believer in “walking the talk.”
Through the lockdown experience, the Cosgrove family has been committed to getting out, around their neighbourhood, and keeping active. They have used lockdown as an opportunity to explore, and the Tour de Canterbury is providing further inspiration for that sense of adventure as a family.
“Almost every day we have been out down the river trail, or around the lake on our bikes.”
They welcomed news of the Tour de Canterbury to keep the momentum going. Their bike rides as a family were certainly inspired by the lockdown environment, and their progress has been exponential.
“We started with biking about five to seven kms, but the kids would get tired and bored. Now we’re up to doing about 18 to 20km at a fairly reasonable pace.”
The virtual event offers the participants the opportunity to log and trace their progress across the Canterbury and Mackenzie regions, and offers information and facts about current locations and checkpoints along the routes. “The kids love being able to see their progress and track their milestones against others in the event.”
“For us it’s just about getting out as a family, we’re not really challenging ourselves in time or competing. We just want to get out and be active together.”
Sign up before Thursday May 14 – Walk, Run or Bike, Do whatever you like!
Tour de Canterbury is a virtual event encouraging people to walk/run and bike to accumulate kms. They submit them on a public leaderboard, which then records results and moves their race bib number across a map of the Canterbury region. Two courses – 250km (navigating the city, Selwyn District and North Canterbury) and 1100km (the equivalent of Twizel to Kaikoura and back).
Put on your red and black, get active together, and challenge your friends and whanau.
