The Canterbury Rams are excited to be hosting Friday nights must win Sky Sport NZ Breakers game. The match is the Breakers final regular season fixture – against the S.E. Melbourne Phoenix in Christchurch – and a win will go a long way to securing a play-off spot.
“The Rams organisation has made it a priority to bring top-flight basketball to Christchurch as the city was starved from Breakers regular season and Tall Black games for a long time.” Says Rams General Manager, Caleb Harrison.
“We think it is vital for the growth of the sport for young kids and their families to be able to see their aspirational role models in person. In time, I am sure we will see more and more Cantabrians pulling on the Breakers, Tall Blacks & Tall Fern singlets as a result.”
Former Cashmere High School old boy and Canterbury Ram, Ethan Rusbatch one such player who has made the transition to play for the Sky Sport NZ Breakers. Rusbatch signing on back in September for his second stint at the NZ Franchise.
The two NZ Breakers games played in Christchurch this season are the first regular season games that have been brought to Christchurch since 2004. The Tall Blacks game in Christchurch in 2018 was also the first Tall Blacks game in Christchurch since 2004. Christchurch has really got behind these events including 6,000 at a Rams game at Horncastle Arena in 2018. Friday night will be no different with over 6,000 expected for the game. Late Rams owner John Watson was the first to take basketball games to Horncastle Arena when the Rams routinely played games there in the 90’s.
The games are made possible because of the Canterbury public getting out and supporting these events. A big thanks to Go Orange who have been Game Day Partners for the Tall Blacks & Breakers games. Also, the Christchurch Casino who donated a fundraising dinner to underwrite taking the first Rams game to Horncastle Arena. Through the support of these commercial partners and the Canterbury public showing up in force to these games, more high-level international basketball games will be able to be brought to Christchurch.
